DIY welding table

Homemade Welding Table

When it comes to building a solid welding station, I wanted something that would not only withstand some serious work but would also help maximize the limited space in my workshop. After a lot of thought, I decided on a heavy-duty, mobile welding table with a perforated top. Here’s how I put it all together.

Choosing the Tabletop: Perforated with 16mm Holes

The heart of any welding table is the tabletop. I went with a perforated table top with 16mm holes, which allows me to use clamps to hold down workpieces firmly, giving a huge boost to efficiency and precision. With the perforated top, I don’t need to constantly reposition the pieces, and the 16mm holes are perfect for the custom DIY clamps I recently shared.

Building the Frame

For the frame, I went with 40x40x3mm steel profiles to ensure the table could handle some heavy loads. This steel is sturdy enough to keep everything steady during intense welding sessions without budging. It’s an ideal choice for a table that’s going to be loaded with clamps, metal stock, and tools, not to mention my TIG welder and gas bottle storage underneath.

Smart Storage Solution

One of my main goals was to make the most of the space underneath the table. Since I wanted to store my TIG welder and gas bottle there, I needed to design a layout that would allow both items to fit safely and still be easily accessible. This was a bit tricky because space was tight, but I managed to get everything in place while keeping enough clearance for the welding cables and hoses.

Making It Mobile: Adjustable Wheels for Stability on Any Surface

To make the table truly versatile, I decided to mount it on wheels for easy mobility. But a heavy-duty table like this also needs stability, especially on uneven surfaces, so I opted for height-adjustable wheels. This feature allows me to keep the table level, ensuring my workpieces remain stable regardless of the floor’s condition. When it’s time to move it, I can adjust the wheels for smooth rolling, then lock it down again when it’s in position.

Final Thoughts

Building this table was a rewarding project that solved a lot of issues I faced with limited space. Now I’ve got a versatile, heavy-duty workstation with easy clamp access, mobility, and efficient storage for my welding essentials. If you’re thinking about building your own table, I highly recommend going for a perforated top and adjustable wheels—it makes all the difference.
